According to public information, Apple’s wireless charging technology used on new phones is the Qi wireless standard that supports the WPC Alliance. In this alliance, more than 200 globally renowned companies including Nokia, HTC, LG, Sony, Samsung, Qualcomm and Apple are gathered.
It now appears that the Qi standard promoted by WPC is undoubtedly the first choice for wireless charging. But looking back at the development of wireless charging, there was competition for WPC, A4WP and PMA in the early stage; later it evolved into WPC and Airfuel (Airfuel merged from A4WP and PMA). The reason why WPC can break through is mainly related to its versatility and compatibility. In addition to its high efficiency, safety and large volume, the Qi standard is almost the choice of all manufacturers.
As the mainstream wireless charging standard in the industry, the WPC Alliance initially promoted magnetic induction wireless charging, but after Qi 1.2, they incorporated magnetic resonance technology and added support for multi-device charging. According to the WPC, the introduction of magnetic resonance is mainly due to two points: one is to provide more space freedom for low-power products (mainly longitudinal distance), and the other is to provide more power. At this point, wireless charging has the potential to break out.
After understanding its development and principles, the practical application of Qi standard wireless charging requires the receiver and transmitter to achieve wireless charging. When the mobile phone equipped with the receiving end is placed above the charging platform of the body, the device will generate voltage through the electromagnetic induction to directly charge the mobile phone or the battery.
